The MASTERY Project – Mathematics and Science Teacher Education Reform in Yemen – is a project of the Faculties of Education and Faculties of Science of Al-Hodeidah University, Thamar University, and Sana’a University. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research oversees the project, and the Educational Research and Development Centre of the Ministry of Education is also involved, as are several regional Offices of Education. The Dutch project partner is the Centre for International Cooperation at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
The project is funded by the Netherlands government through Nuffic as part of the NPT programme in Yemen.
The MASTERY Project is a programme of curriculum development and pilot implementation of new courses and improved teaching methodologies through training workshops, coaching, exposure to good practice in the region and the Netherlands, and equipping teacher education laboratories.
The project began in 2005, and will run through December 2008, with the possibility of extension through the summer of 2009 to continue the implementation of new teacher education programmes at the three universities. The final phase of the project will also produce a dissemination plan for the other public universities in the Republic of Yemen.
